Following its successful construction of the N05-A offshore gas production platform, Smulders HSM has once again been selected by ONE-Dyas for the next phase of the project. The company has been awarded the contract for the construction and integration of a new compression module that will support continued production of natural gas from the N05-A field in the Dutch North Sea.
Building on a proven partnership
Smulders HSM will execute the project through an integrated delivery team with SPIE, in close cooperation with ONE-Dyas. By operating as one project team, the partners aim to reduce interfaces, improve decision-making and increase efficiency throughout the engineering, procurement, construction and installation phases.
“We are proud to continue our long-term collaboration with ONE-Dyas on the next phase of the N05-A development. The project brings together our proven capabilities, detailed knowledge of the existing platform and an integrated delivery approach with ONE-Dyas, SPIE and offshore installation contractor Scaldis. The N05-A project is a flagship example of how Dutch entrepreneurship can support domestic gas production, while leveraging the expertise of the Dutch manufacturing industry and enabling low-emission production through power supplied by a nearby offshore wind farm in the North Sea,” said Hans Leerdam, Commercial Director at Smulders HSM.
“The compression module marks an important next step in the development of N05-A. It will help maintain efficient production while making full use of the platform’s existing low-emission infrastructure. It also underlines ONE-Dyas’ commitment to responsible domestic gas production as part of the energy transition. We are pleased to continue this work with trusted Dutch partners who know the platform and have proven their expertise. Building on that foundation, we are confident this next phase will meet our high expectations for safety, quality, schedule and budget,” said Jan Willem in ’t Anker, Construction/Engineering Manager at ONE-Dyas.
Supporting efficient production through innovative infrastructure
The compression module will consist of two independent compression trains, allowing the N05-A platform to operate at two different pressure regimes as conditions in the field evolve over time. The module will measure approximately 27.2 by 15.0 by 15.0 metres and will have an estimated dry weight of 875 tonnes, including approximately 350 tonnes of structural steel.
A unique platform in the North Sea
The N05-A platform has been in operation since March 2025 and is the first offshore gas production platform in the North Sea to operate entirely on offshore wind-generated electricity. Connected to the nearby German Riffgat offshore wind farm, the platform uses offshore wind power to run its production facilities. As a result, operational emissions from the platform have been reduced to near zero.
Supporting security of supply during the energy transition
The Netherlands is working towards a carbon-neutral energy system by 2050. While renewable energy sources such as wind and solar continue to expand rapidly, natural gas is expected to remain an important part of the energy mix during the transition period, helping to balance the energy system and support security of supply.
The N05-A development combines these security-of-supply benefits with extensive electrification and a significantly reduced emissions profile. By connecting offshore gas production to offshore wind energy, the project demonstrates how existing energy needs can be met while substantially lowering emissions.
